In light of contemporary processes of globalization and internationalization, there are more people than ever moving between cultures, countries and regions. This travel has intensified contact between cultures and languages, causing translation to take on an increasingly significant role. Literary translation, in particular, is of paramount importance: When literature is considered a poetic and aesthetic means of articulating, sharing and circulating cultural knowledge, it becomes both a medium of remembering roots as well as one of negotiating cultural encounters and prefiguring new modes of sociality.
As a result, the demand for highly qualified, academically trained translators has been steadily increasing over the years – in the economic sector as well as in all spheres of society. To meet the cultural challenges of our transcultural modernity, translators need outstanding language skills combined with a profound sense of cultural awareness and reflexivity. The integrative master’s programme “Literary Translation” accommodates several major European languages. Merging excellent research with a range of professional qualifications, the programme explores processes of interlingual and intercultural translations on a wide range of theoretical and practical levels. The curriculum includes workshops with practitioners in the fields of translation, publishing and media. To guarantee a decidedly professional orientation, this MA programme also offers various forms of cooperation with the Europäisches Übersetzer-Kollegium in Straelen (the first and largest international centre for translators of literature and non-fiction).
Programme: The MA “Literary Translation” is a two-year programme; graduates will obtain a “Master of Arts” degree. The study programme comprises one or two source languages with German as the target language. Source languages for one-language programmes include English, French or Spanish. For two-language programmes, English must be combined with any one of the following other languages: French, Italian or Spanish.
