Bachelor and Master in English Language and Literature

In addition to a range of courses dedicated to the development of language and communication skills as well as professional, intercultural and other competences, the Department of English offers undergraduate and graduate level courses on various aspects of literary translation. Literary Translation: Practical Aspects, taught at the bachelor’s level serves as an introduction to the Literary Translation Module offered as part of the MA in English Philology Program.

Literary Translation Module, taught since the 2017/2018 academic year, includes five obligatory courses: Literary Translation – Contemporary Theoretical Approaches, Literature in Translation – World Literature, dedicated to various theoretical aspects of translation theory, and Literary Translation Workshop I through III focusing on the practice of literary translation and its scholarly treatment. The students enrolled in the Literary Translation Module are required to write their MA thesis which includes the students’ translation into Croatian or English of a chosen literary text accompanied by an introduction that may focus on various translation aspects, offer critical treatment of the student’s translation, or set the translated work in context.

The students may also choose Independent Practical Work as an elective course offering hands-on, practical approach to various aspects of book and translation business, allowing the students to obtain practical experience in the work of literary journals, publishing houses specialized in publishing literature in translation, as well as various platforms and events specialized in literature and culture.

Besides learning about different aspects of translation in theoretical, historical and practical sense and producing literary translation from English into Croatian and vice versa, the students are given an opportunity to participate in various translation-oriented projects and activities (such as The Festival of the European Short Story) organized by the members of our teaching staff or to publish their translations or articles on different aspects of translation in our department’s journal ([sic] – a Journal or Literature, Culture and Literary Translation, www.sic-journal.org).
