Bulgarian Translations of Ancient Authors – Bachelor (Classical Philology)

Course details

The objective of the course is to familiarise students with the significance of translations from classical languages and the prevailing trends in the translation production of ancient authors and texts within the Bulgarian cultural milieu. The course examines the various translation strategies and methods employed throughout history, analysing the reasons behind their use in the specific cultural and historical context. The coursework is based on excerpts from the most significant translations into Bulgarian from Greco-Roman antiquity, which are analysed in the context of the conditions prevailing in the receiving Bulgarian culture. Additionally, some of the most significant ancient works are examined in comparative terms with translations into other languages and their reception in other cultures.
